Summary

The moment they saw each other, Bean and Ivy knew they wouldn't be friends。 But when Bean plays a joke on her sister, Nancy, and has to hide quickly, Ivy comes to the rescue, proving that sometimes the best of friends are people never meant to like each other。 Vibrant characters and lots of humor make this a charming and addictive introduction to Ivy and Bean。

Really cute story about two little kids finding each other and becoming fast friends。

My boys enjoyed it but I found it a little dull and much prefer girl characters like Ramona or Abby Hanlon's Dory。 Ivy is fine but Bean is sort of mean so I took an immediate dislike to her。 My boys enjoyed it but I found it a little dull and much prefer girl characters like Ramona or Abby Hanlon's Dory。 Ivy is fine but Bean is sort of mean so I took an immediate dislike to her。 。。。more

This is a wonderful kids book with a great message。 It really shows children how to overcome differences and get along with one another。 This is a very important lesson for children to learn at a young age

Ivy and Bean could have been a four-star+ intro to the tale of two imaginative seven-year-old neighbor girls who find out that they have more in common than they first thought。Positives: This could be the beginning of an interesting friendship。Negatives: There is an absence of a much deserved reprimand along with appropriate consequences for Bean (who has the potential to be a truly nasty brat - she is not simply mischievous, she's actually mean-spirited)。 The mean-spirited humor at others' expe Ivy and Bean could have been a four-star+ intro to the tale of two imaginative seven-year-old neighbor girls who find out that they have more in common than they first thought。Positives: This could be the beginning of an interesting friendship。Negatives: There is an absence of a much deserved reprimand along with appropriate consequences for Bean (who has the potential to be a truly nasty brat - she is not simply mischievous, she's actually mean-spirited)。 The mean-spirited humor at others' expense, the nasty name calling, and the lack of any true "heart" or moral/lesson definitely drops the value of the story, imo。 Note: Children, especially, have black and white definitions of right and wrong and what is "Fair"。They find it comforting (real life is so often lacking this sense of "Fairness") and appreciate finding in their stories。 Since it is missing in Ivy and Bean, the story feels somehow incomplete。(After finishing the book, a good question to ask is how others in the story might "feel", especially Nancy。) 。。。more

Sweet story about two young girls (around age eight), their roe with one of their sisters, and their budding friendship。 Very simple。 A good first chapter book for burgeoning readers。

Reviewing early chapter books for my niece!2。5 stars。 This was an entertaining enough story plot, but I didn’t appreciate how disrespectful and bad this little girl was。 She was constantly trying to take revenge on her sister for being mean to her, or disobeying what her mom told her to do。 I appreciate mischievous characters but this little girl just didn’t seem to have any conscience at all。 Throughout the book, concepts are introduced that I wouldn’t necessarily want to introduce to 6-8 year Reviewing early chapter books for my niece!2。5 stars。 This was an entertaining enough story plot, but I didn’t appreciate how disrespectful and bad this little girl was。 She was constantly trying to take revenge on her sister for being mean to her, or disobeying what her mom told her to do。 I appreciate mischievous characters but this little girl just didn’t seem to have any conscience at all。 Throughout the book, concepts are introduced that I wouldn’t necessarily want to introduce to 6-8 year olds… she was constantly saying things were “bossy”, “boring”, “disgusting”, etc。 She snuck out of her house and hid from her mom because she knew she’d been bad and didn’t want to be punished。 She laughed when her sister fell in a pile of worms and mud。 Like I said, it’s one thing for a character to be mischievous, but I don’t like the idea of a 6-8 year old kid reading this and getting ideas about how to evade discipline or how to sass their parents or siblings。 They’ll figure that stuff out on their own, they don’t need to have it modeled in books by other kids their age。 I would not recommend this series for young readers。 👎🏻 。。。more

I struggle with Ivy and Bean。 We received them as a gift and read them with my kids at night。 My 6 year olds girl loves them, and I find the stories enjoyable and the chapters just the right length for a chapter a night。 My 6 year old even takes a crack at reading them sometimes, but she’s not quite ready。 Anyway, the stories are good and I love the friendship。 There’s a lot of mean girl, bullying, and kids acting out。 I go back and forth here。 On one hand that’s life。 On the other, I’d rather i I struggle with Ivy and Bean。 We received them as a gift and read them with my kids at night。 My 6 year olds girl loves them, and I find the stories enjoyable and the chapters just the right length for a chapter a night。 My 6 year old even takes a crack at reading them sometimes, but she’s not quite ready。 Anyway, the stories are good and I love the friendship。 There’s a lot of mean girl, bullying, and kids acting out。 I go back and forth here。 On one hand that’s life。 On the other, I’d rather it not be glorified。 。。。more

My middlest read this for fun。 I just needed to find something to get her in a habit of reading consistently。 I bought this on a whim from a used book dealer on IG。 Wish I had known there was some witchery in it。 Not horrible but not what I would choose knowingly。

Audiobook read by Cassandra Morris who was awesome! I suspect I enjoyed the book even more because of her voice acting。I've not been a parent so I didn't read it from that perspective。 The story is creative, amusing, and unfolds well。 Audiobook read by Cassandra Morris who was awesome! Super cute。 I didn’t think I would like the book。 These girls are everything I wanted to be at this age。 I’m glad I’m adding it to my classroom library。 I can thank a former student as well for this fun read!

Read for the girlsRead aloud: 1-3rd gradeRead on their own 2-3rd gradeThere are other young girl/best friend stories I would prefer over this one。 The older and younger sister are pretty rude to each other and I felt like the storyline wouldn’t necessarily keep my girls’ attention to read on their own。 Maybe since there are some illustrations it would。 Nothing too disturbing, although at the beginning, bean mentions being in a dressing room, bored, and purposefully looking under the partition at Read for the girlsRead aloud: 1-3rd gradeRead on their own 2-3rd gradeThere are other young girl/best friend stories I would prefer over this one。 The older and younger sister are pretty rude to each other and I felt like the storyline wouldn’t necessarily keep my girls’ attention to read on their own。 Maybe since there are some illustrations it would。 Nothing too disturbing, although at the beginning, bean mentions being in a dressing room, bored, and purposefully looking under the partition at the lady changing in the next stall。 🧐 kind of weird for a kid’s book。 。。。more

Bean plays a joke on her sister。 She put out a $20 bill and attached a string to it。 When her sister came home and saw it and went to grab it, Bean pulled it away。 Her sister was pulling her away to the house to tell on her and Bean slipped into Ivy's backyard to hide。 That's when Bean and Ivy became friends。 They tried to come up with a magic potion to make Bean's sister dance for the rest of her life- and it worked! Well she danced for a second but then it stopped。 Bean plays a joke on her sister。 She put out a $20 bill and attached a string to it。 When her sister came home and saw it and went to grab it, Bean pulled it away。 Her sister was pulling her away to the house to tell on her and Bean slipped into Ivy's backyard to hide。 That's when Bean and Ivy became friends。 They tried to come up with a magic potion to make Bean's sister dance for the rest of her life- and it worked! I like that they are very good friends after all。 And I like that they only want something to discover。

It is not easy to capture the magic of childhood while keeping the action grounded in mundane reality。 But this book manages to do it。

Doesn’t Live up to the HypeI’ve heard a lot of good things about this series, but after reading the first book, I have to say, it just didn’t live up to the hype for me。 A large chunk in the beginning of the book is spent on Bean complaining or all-around being bratty。 While I encourage this kind of realistic behavior in books—the last thing I want is a bunch of books with characters kids can’t relate too—in this instance it doesn’t seem to serve any purpose for the plot, and it isn’t even funny Doesn’t Live up to the HypeI’ve heard a lot of good things about this series, but after reading the first book, I have to say, it just didn’t live up to the hype for me。 A large chunk in the beginning of the book is spent on Bean complaining or all-around being bratty。 While I encourage this kind of realistic behavior in books—the last thing I want is a bunch of books with characters kids can’t relate too—in this instance it doesn’t seem to serve any purpose for the plot, and it isn’t even funny。 The illustrations too, while not abjectly horrible, leave something to be desired。 The way Blackall minimizes some features like noses and limbs but exaggerates the head and eyes make the people look almost inhuman。 To sum up: if it’s what’s on hand, go for it, but I won’t be running to check out the sequel。 。。。more

This was a book I used to read in early middle school that me and my friends really enjoyed。 It is relatable and engaging and nice that the main characters are girls which made it more fun to read for us。

Ivy and Bean is, in my opinion, a classic, and if you have kids you should ask them if they would like to read it。 Great for younger ages, I would say age 6。

Genuinely cheered me up during finals week。 Emotions are volatile and thoughts are scattered。 Will not be taking any inquiries regarding this review。 Love a good nostalgia read。 I have been told I look like a Bean but I am an Ivy。 Oh, to be seven years old again。。。

Ivy and Bean live across the cul de sac from one another and neither wants to be friends with the other。 From appearances, they both seem very different, thus the mutual disinterest in friendship from both girls。 Until one day, while Bean is hiding in the bushes to prank her older sister, Nancy, Ivy comes to Bean's rescue as Bean is running away to not get in trouble for the prank she just tried to pull。 This is the beginning to a friendship that quickly takes off, one mischievous act after anot Ivy and Bean live across the cul de sac from one another and neither wants to be friends with the other。 From appearances, they both seem very different, thus the mutual disinterest in friendship from both girls。 Until one day, while Bean is hiding in the bushes to prank her older sister, Nancy, Ivy comes to Bean's rescue as Bean is running away to not get in trouble for the prank she just tried to pull。 This is the beginning to a friendship that quickly takes off, one mischievous act after another。As I first read the book, I found myself chuckling as to how realistic the sibling dynamic between Bean and Nancy is。 Nancy is the bossy sister who can shop all day while Bean is the poor younger sibling who has to get dragged along, bored to death the whole time。 It also started out nice as Ivy and Bean discovered that they did enjoy each other after all。 But what was bothersome was that the friendship was fueled by the desire to prank Nancy and lie and sneak around while doing it。 It was just a little too much attitude not enough kindness for me。I could see why kids would like this book because it is funny。 I think you just have to know your children before handing this book to them。 For me, I wouldn't have thought twice about letting 3 of my kids read this because they wouldn't mimic these behaviors or actions。 However, I have 1 who at a young age, was more prone to mischief and not always discerning about mimicing bad behavior and language, so I wouldn't have handed it to them。 。。。more
